AIDS kit I: simulation of HIV detection by ELISA.
An HIV test detects HIV infections indirectly using an ELISA test by looking for HIV antibodies in the blood. The test works by taking antibodies from the patient's blood and adding them to a microplate coated with HIV antigen. If HIV antibodies are present in the blood, they will bind to the antigens on the plate. This binding is detected with an enzyme-linked secondary antibody that causes a colour change when substrate is added.
This colour change can be quantitatively measured by photo spectrometers.
In this experiment, your students will perform an ELISA test by coating microtiter wells with simulated HIV antigen and then testing simulated donor serum for HIV antibodies.
The discolouration is readily observable by eye.
The kit does NOT contain an HIV virus, but a harmless non-human protein with which the test is done.
Material for 10 groups, duration approximately 60 minutes.
Kit contains: simulated HIV antigen, serum samples, antibodies, buffers, microtitre plates, pipette and micro test tubes.
Also required: 37 degree Celsius incubator, micropipette, glassware and distilled or demineralised water.
