Tellurium N - the - innovation at the construction of the Tellurium - the best tool at the age of globalization.
The particular innovation about this device are the insert of a Fresnel-lense for the generation of an extremely light and parallel bundle of light for the complete irradiation of the globe, the focusing of a bright spot on the globe for tho purpose of demonstrating the apparent movement of the sun between the tropics and the employment of a horizon disc with a shadow-stick-figure so as to indicate the position of the sun through the fall of the shadow.
The horizon disc with the shadow-stick-figure
With the help of the horizon disc, which can be placed self-adhesively anywhere on the globe, the varying lighting situations on the earth can be very easily and understandably explained on the shadowstick-figure.
The big globe with the telescopic polar stick
On the big globe (diameter 15 cm) the limit of the shadow and other details can be made out also from a farther distance. With the telescopic polar stick (length 33 cm) the positioning of the earth in space with adjustment of the earth's axis upon a fixed point (Pole Star) can be shown convincingly.
The date disc and the pointer
According to the position of the red pointer, the "little boat", the earth's axis is turned towards the sun or turned away (seasons). The dates for the summer and winter solstice as well as the equinoxes are especially marked on the date disc.
The Fresnel-lens
A short-focal-length Fresnel-lens provides a directed (parallel) light. That way a full half of the globe is sunlit and the limits of the lighting (day and night) correspond to the natural ones. Previously available Telluriums cannot achieve that.
The three Positions of the Fresnel-lens:
The Fresnel-lens can be put on the arm of the Tellurium in three positions:
Day and night, seasons
In this position one half of the globe is fully lit and the limit of the shadow (on one hemisphere) can be clearly made out all around the globe
Point of sun, tropics
In this position the lens produces a point with a small halo on the
centre of the globe. While the earth is turning round the sun the point of light wanders across the line between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
The phases of the moon
In this position of the lens the moon is specially illuminated and
while the moon is moving round the earth the phases of the moon and
eclipses can be clearly demonstrated.
The teacher's help with video
For the work with the Tellurium the teacher's help contains detailed teaching elements for the following subjects:
the earth as a gyroscope - day and night - hour - polar day and polar night - tropics - seasons - lengths of day and night in various latitudes - times of the day - phases of the moon - eclipses - tides. With it will be supplied a video that demonstrates the sequences and functions of the individual elements of the Tellurium concerning the subjects mentioned above.
The power-supply
The 20 W halogen lamp of the sun is provided for by a plug-mains-appliance which is connected by means of a long cable.
