Impressive sparks with a length of up to 100 mm can be obtained – but the equipment is still safe to use thanks to the very low output current. Electrons are transferred to the dome by a nonconductive belt which passes two rollers made from different plastics.
The design is open to inspection – even the dome is easily dismantled – so the principles behind the device can be studied.
The belt is driven by either a crank or a variable speed motor. On the top of the dome, a 4 mm socket is provided for accessories. Dust cover and manual included.
