If a client has diabetes mellitus, wounds do not heal as quickly. This makes treating them especially difficult.
The "diabetic foot" contains a number of characteristic wounds. The unique thing about the foot is that it can be put on, thus creating an almost lifelike exercise situation.
- Swimmer's eczema/fungal infection between the 4th and 5th toe
- Status after amputation of the 2nd toe
- Deep small wound between the 3rd and 4th toe that can be punctured
- Claw toe
- Pressure ulcer with a lot of callus on the ankle, making the actual ulcer look smaller than it is (pressure ulcer with a lot of callus formation)
- Ulcer on the underside of the foot which can be probed up to the bone
- Hallux valgus
- Necrotic toe
- Heel crack with bedsore
- Ulcer cruris venosum with signs of chronic venous insufficiency
